I wore my Continental Skirt the other day. We’re experiencing some beautiful fall weather here in New York, and layers are helpful for the cool mornings and evenings. I need to be comfortable when I’m in the studio since I’m on my feet all day, and these boots are almost like sneakers, they’re so easy to wear.

Post your Lisette photos to the Flickr group and show us how you wear your style!

Okay, since I’m the new girl around here I want to let all of you in on a well-known secret about me. I LOVE color. Admittedly I get bored with my clothes quickly, so I entertain myself  each day and try to find the most inspired combination of colors to put together and attempt to pull it off. (Some days are more successful than others.)

As a new transplant to NYC, the land of black and neutrals, my closetful of colorful clothes makes everyone here look at me as if I am a tourist. But thanks to strong color trends on the fall runways, even New York is showing color some love. Clearly I arrived here just in time!

Liesl has been talking on the blog about how she’s been so inspired by color for fall. I can’t agree more. One of my favorite fall fashion color trends is what I call lipstick colors. Burgundy, mauve, pink, red, and plums are showing up everywhere. You can mix these hues together for a cool 70’s vibe or pair them with neutrals for a rich, sophisticated look.

For the adventurous, pair them with neon brights. These fabric colors are definitely showing up in my fall sewing to-do list. I’m convinced that burgundy is the color of the moment because it simply looks good with every color from brights to pastels (and how can anything that reminds you of good wine be a bad thing?). And dare I say, that it is a color that looks good on almost everyone. I’m going to sew up a holiday party dress in the yummy Lisette burgundy sateen as a present to myself.

And best of all, I already have the lipstick to match.

Leave a comment letting us know your favorite color trend this season and how you plan to incorporate it into your fall sewing and show us how you add color to your style!

Today we’re starting a new feature called Wear Your Style Friday. Each week we’ll post a photo of something Lisette that one of us has made showing how we incorporate that piece into our wardrobe.  We’ll show you a variety of pieces, and some of them may show up repeatedly in different outfits. Sometimes we’ll feature Lisette fabrics, and others times we might show you how a Lisette pattern looks when made in wool, silk, or other fibers.

So to get things started, I shortened my Itinerary Dress by about four inches and turned it into a tunic. The print just happened to work perfectly with one of my favorite scarves, left over from a runway show when I worked for Ralph Lauren. (I have to wrap the scarf around my neck about 18 times, it’s so long. I guess they were going for drama with the length!) I dressed the tunic down with jeans for work, since we’re pretty casual here.

I hope you’ll be inspired to post your own photos to the Lisette Flickr group. Show us how you wear your style!

A few weeks ago, I mentioned how color is back for fall and how happy I am about that.

I’ve been thinking a lot about color recently, and I keep coming back to images of the festival of color, or Holi, that occurs every year in India. At the festival, participants celebrate by throwing pigments at each other. The result is the most amazing cacocphany of color I’ve ever seen.

All these images come from a Flickr group by Barsana Nandagon. You can see many more images from the Festival there.

We could use a holiday like this ourselves, couldn’t we? What better excuse for a celebration than simply the fabulousness of the color around us.

Over the years I’ve done a few projects with Stitch magazine, including my two recent instructional videos. There are two reasons why it’s always a pleasure to work with Stitch: the quality of the product they produce is always so high, and working with Stitch‘s founding editor Tricia Waddell is always a great experience.

That’s why I’m especially pleased to announce that Tricia has recently joined the growing staff of Liesl and Co., the parent company of the Oliver + S and Lisette brands.

Tricia will be leading development of an exciting new brand which we will launch next year. I also expect that you’ll see her blogging here occasionally and posting  in the Lisette discussion forums as well.

So please join me in giving her a warm welcome. As you get to know her here (if you don’t already), I’m sure you’ll come to like and respect her as much as I do.

Seams, Closures + HemsI’m happy to let you know that Seams, Closures + Hems, the second of the two DVDs I filmed with Interweave this summer, is now available for purchase.

This new video is intended as a companion to the first, Apparel Sewing Basics. As the title implies, this video focus on the techniques that you can use to give your garments a professional finish. In it I walk you through four different types of seam finishes, button holes and zippers, and three different styles of hemming (including some hand hemming techniques that will give your sewing projects a beautiful finish). I also share some information about my design process and give you some other tips for improving your sewing and making it more enjoyable.

I hope you enjoy watching this video as much as I enjoyed making it!
